Are you bringing main character energy to your finances?

In this week's Video I talk about why the brother/sister relationship in Love Actually makes me yell at the TV every single time I watch it and what that has to do with your finances.

Hey, and welcome to Mel's Money Musings. You know, I'm going to say something a little bit controversial and say that I don't love Love Actually the movie. Now, there are couples that I don't mind with in Love Actually, but I cannot watch the scenes where it's a brother sister relationship. You know, the one where she is lusting after the guy in the office and no matter what, she will always pick up her brother's cool.

Or when they finally get down to start doing the deed. The call comes in and of course, what does she do? She answers the freaking call. Were you like me? And just yelling at her to put the phone on bloody silent and answer it in 20 minutes. or ten minutes time. Well, you know, I was being generous. One of the thing reasons I think it annoys me is because she's refusing to live her own life.

I've never understood why she can't be there for her brother and leave a rich and fulfilling life. And it's why I stopped yelling at the TV screen and just either fast forward through that whole storyline, if I watch Love Actually or just choose to not watch Love Actually all together.

Now, what does that have to do with your finances?

Well, kind of everything. That's because I believe many of you are not acting like the main character when it comes to your finances. You are blaming and allowing all of these distractions and things to get into the what in the way. When it comes to main character energy and being there for your finances. You are blaming Afterpay, you are blaming inflation, you are blaming rising interest rates, you're blaming rising cost of living.

You're blaming the traumatic thing that happened last year. And I am not saying any of those things are not problematic and can't derail you financially in the same way that in that Love Actually storyline. I am so sure that her brother, being in that home in that situation has absolutely thrown a spanner in her life, has derailed her life.

The difference is I want her desperately to have a life and to be there for her brother. And I want the same for you. I want you to run out of excuses. not money this year. I want you to bring that main character energy into your finances, to not let someone else be driving and you, to be asleep on the back seat or in the passenger seat going, don't do that, don’t do that.

And I'm not talking about your partner running the finances. I'm talking about you just being unconscious with your finances or maybe just sitting there hoping that what you're doing is enough.
