Are you skipping the basics?

In this week's video I talk about how often we overlook the basics because there are other more fun or exciting things that we think we could be doing instead... and how that might just be derailing you (either financially or in any part of life).

Hey, and welcome to Mel's Money Musings.

So I wanted to jump on with a different sort of musing today, and that's because I wanted to remind you that often it's the boring and it's the simple that is most effective when it comes to finances, or let's be honest, when it comes to many parts of our lives.

Let's look at exercise. Yes, we could chase the most exciting new science and research around what we should be doing. Yet the boring is discipline. It's showing up most days. It's moving most days. It's doing that relentless everyday movement that I don't know about you, but I'm not necessarily a huge fan of, but I know it works and it's important to do.

If I've got that beautiful base of exercise, then sure I can go and layer on other stuff that maybe I'm more interested in or maybe I'll shake it up sometimes and try new things. But ultimately what it comes down to is moving regularly. Things like your 10,000 steps, et cetera.

I could give you other examples around relationships and food, but let's make it about finance. When it comes to finance, a lot of us in the stories and the conversations that I have are looking for that, that silver bullet, that thing that'll quickly take them from where they are to where they wanna be, effortlessly. And yet, the truth is, what it is about is discipline. It's about relentlessly doing the basics so that it pulls us along financially to where we wanna go.

The basics of things like having our bank accounts set up so that we're not just eating from the one account. It's automating. It's understanding the goals that we wanna have and being excited about working towards them. It's understanding who we are so that we are creating the habits that are actually right for us.

It's taking the time to learn about investing, whether that's property or shares or business. It's having regular date nights when it comes to money with our partners so that money's just another thing that we talk about. It's checking on what our bank accounts are, and our asset position, and our goals are regularly so that we know if we are on track or not.

A lot of this isn't sexy or or exciting, but it is that discipline of doing the basics well. If you are not doing the basics well financially, I want you to do two things.

One is jump on the wait list for the My Financial Adulting Plan, and let's fix that for you.

And two, I want you to think of one thing this week you could do to bring the basics back to your finances.
